Abstract

Of the 3400 or so known valid mineral species, 292 were first described from Africa, between c 1838–1988. Additionally, there are 220 invalid phases representing inadequately described species, compositional and physical variants of existing valid minerals; also included within this group are hypothetical molecules, synonyms, mixtures and generic terms. Of the recorded number if unnamed minerals, a majority are PG phases from South Africa. Africa ranks 4th in terms of numbers of new type-minerals per continen Zaire is the most productive source in Africa for new minerals, followed by Namibia. This trend is reversed with regards the most productive localities; Tsumeb (Namibia) ranks first followed by Shinkolobwe (Zaire). Almost half of all known African type-occurrences are located in South Africa, Zaire and Namibia. Tsumeb and Shinkolobwe are within the top six of the most productive localities for new minerals, worldwide. At least forteen chemical groups of minerals were originally described from Africa; several of these still remain unique to the respective type occurrences.
